Groups / events over 10 ppl, there will be a 10% gratuity added to the total and divided among all the instructors unless you request no gratuity due unsatisfactory service or not wanting to include a tip.

Surf Lessons

AVAILABLE EVERYDAY 7AM TO 3PM!

LESSONS CAN BE DONE ANYTIME,
HOWEVER THE TIDE, SWELL SIZE, AND WIND ARE MAJOR FACTORS.
MORNINGS ARE USUALLY BETTER THAN THE EVENINGS.

DON'T WORRY IF YOU SCHEDULE A TIME THAT IS NOT CONDUCIVE FOR A GOOD LESSON,
YOUR INSTRUCTOR WILL LET YOU KNOW AND OFFER YOU
2 ALTERNATIVE TIMES.

If you have never surfed before we suggest a 1.5 or 2 hour lesson.
All first time surf lessons have a 30 minute beach lesson covering the essentials of surfing.

KAPOWUI SURF LESSON POLICIES

1. All-Inclusive Pricing – No Hidden Fees

Your lesson price includes everything: wetsuit, surfboard, instructor, and unlimited waves.
All taxes, city, and insurance fees are included.
If you use a credit card to pay for your lesson, there will be a 3% credit card fee assessed to your payment.
We recommend bringing water, a towel, and sunscreen.

2. 100% Guaranteed Reservations

When you book and pay online, your reservation is guaranteed.

3. Deposits Required

A deposit is required to secure your spot. This policy exists due to frequent no-shows — we value your time and always show up early.

4. Rescheduling & Late Arrival

Call ASAP if you're going to be late, need to reschedule, or cancel.
We’ll do our best to accommodate, but it’s not guaranteed.
Show up on time — late arrivals will only receive the remaining time left.
Same-day rescheduling is considered a cancellation. You’ll be charged for the missed lesson, though we may reschedule as a courtesy.
If the instructor is available, additional lesson time may be purchased — but availability is not guaranteed.

5. Be Early

Arrive at least 5 minutes early. Lessons are scheduled back-to-back.
Factor in:

LA traffic
Parking delays and costs
Murphy’s Law
Hangovers.... maybe i'm projecting.
Pro tip: Add 30 extra minutes to your travel time.

6. Cancellations & Refunds

Cancel at least 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
To request a refund, email or call — cancellations do not automatically trigger refunds.
Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are non-refundable. And you will be charged for the full price of the lesson.

7. Weather & Surf Conditions

Lessons are held rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe (e.g., lightning, huge surf).
We always aim to guide you to the best conditions based on the latest reports.
We don’t offer refunds for non-ideal conditions (c
loudy, cold, high tide, etc.).
If conditions are unsafe, we’ll contact you to reschedule or refund.
If we cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, you’ll receive a full refund.
Instructor changes do not qualify for refunds.

8. Private Lesson & Instructor Requests

If you require a private lesson or specific instructor, leave a note during booking and explain why.
We try to accommodate all requests, but due to limited staff and time, not all requests are guaranteed.
Most single-person lessons may be grouped unless for young children or special needs.

9. Private Lesson Price Adjustment

If you booked a private lesson but are added to a group (never more than 5), you’ll be refunded the price difference at the end of your session.

10. Time Zone Notice

All bookings are in Pacific Standard Time (PST).
Your Google Calendar should automatically sync to your local time zone.

11. Lesson Location

All lessons meet at our main location:

12. Special Needs, Kids, or Medical Conditions

If booking for a child, someone with special needs, medical issues, or who cannot swim, please include details in your reservation message. We use this info to plan safe and appropriate lesson times.

13. No Intoxication Allowed

Surfing is inherently risky. If you show up intoxicated or extremely hungover, your lesson will be canceled without refund.

14. Waiver of Liability

By participating in any lesson or being present in our operation area, you waive all legal claims against Kapowui, its instructors, equipment, or the City of Los Angeles for any injury or death.
(Yes, we had to say it. We’re broke anyway.)

15. Booking Timeline

You cannot book online less than 12 hours before your desired lesson.
For same-day bookings, call us directly.

2- WHEN YOU BOOK AND PAY ONLINE, YOUR RESERVATION IS 100% GUARANTEED.

3- YOU MUST PAY A DEPOSIT FIRST TO RESERVE YOUR APPOINTMENT, WE ARE SORRY, BUT THIS POLICY WAS INSTILLED DUE TO ALL THE FLAKY "A" HOLES WHO WASTE OUR TIME. WE RESPECT YOUR TIME AND WE ALWAYS SHOW UP EARLY FOR YOUR LESSON.

4- IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE, NEED TO RESCHEDULE, OR CANCEL, CALL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WE WILL TRY TO ACCOMMODATE YOUR NEEDS AS MUCH AS OUR SCHEDULE PERMITS, BUT NOT GUARANTEED. PLAN ON SHOWING UP AT YOUR SCHEDULED LESSON , ON TIME. IF YOU ARE LATE YOU WILL ONLY RECEIVE THE THE REMAINING TIME LEFT ON YOUR LESSON.

TRYING TO RESCHEDULE FOR ANOTHER TIME OR DAY, ON THE SAME DAY AS YOUR LESSON, IS CONSIDERED A CANCELLATION. WE MAYBE ABLE TO RESCHEDULE YOU, BUT THAT IS NOT GUARENTEED AND YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE LESSON YOU MISSED BUT NOT FOR THE RESCHEDULED LESSON.

YOU MAY BE ALLOW TO PAY FOR ANY ADDITIONAL TIME IF THE INSTRUCTOR IS AVAILABLE. OUR INSTRUCTORS USUALLY HAVE BACK TO BACK LESSONS SO IT'S NOT ALWAYS AN OPTION FOR ADDITOINAL TIME TO BE ADDED TO YOUR LESSON.

5- PLEASE ARRIVE 5 MINUTES EARLY TO YOU LESSON. WE SCHEDULE OUR LESSONS BACK TO BACK, IF YOU ARE LATE, IT EATS INTO YOUR LESSON TIME. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE HORROR OF LA TRAFFIC, THE DIFFICULTIES OF PARKING (finding parking, parking lot lines and prices), MURPHY'S LAW, AND THE EXTRA TIME YOU NEED TO GET YOUR HEAD STRAIGHT IF YOU ARE HUNG OVER, TAKE THESE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN PLANNING YOUR DRIVE. (Add 30 minutes to drive time to be safe).

6- 100% REFUND WITH 24 HOUR CANCELLATION NOTICE. If you cancel and want a refund, please send email or call, otherwise your payment will be held as a credit for a future lesson. Refunds are not automatically issued when you cancel.

7- AFTER BOOKING ONLINE, YOU CAN RESCHEDULE YOUR LESSON ONLINE OR CALL UP TO 24 HOURS BEFORE YOUR LESSON WITH NO CHARGE. WE WILL TRY TO ACCOMMODATE YOUR NEW REQUESTED TIME. RESCHEDULING WITH LESS THAN 24 HOURS IS A CANCELLATION AND NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED. ALL LESSONS WILL BE CONDUCTED REGARDLESS OF WEATHER OR SURF CONDITIONS, (UNLESS THE CONDITIONS ARE UNSAFE, MEANING HUGE WAVES OR THUNDERSTORMS) WE WILL ALWAYS GUIDE YOU TOWARDS THE BEST CONDITION ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT SURF REPORT.

WE CAN NOT WAIT FOR PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR ALL LESSON. BE AWARE OF THIS, THERE ARE NO REFUNDS FOR LESSONS GIVEN IN UNFAVORABLE SURF CONDITIONS (CLOUDY, COLD, RAINY, STORMY WAVES, SUPER HIGH TIDE, ETC..).

IF WE KNOW AHEAD OF TIME THE CONDITIONS ARE UNSAFE, WE WILL CONTACT YOU AS SOON AS WE KNOW AND ASK YOU TO RESCHEDULE. IF YOU CAN NOT RESCHEDULE WE WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY. SOMETIMES THE SURF FORECAST IS WRONG OR THE CONDITIONS CHANGE RAPIDLY AND WE DO NOT KNOW UNTIL THE DAY OF YOUR LESSON. IF WE CANCEL ON YOU IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS, YOU GET A FULL REFUND. WE TRY HARD TO GIVE YOU AS MUCH NOTICE AS POSSIBLE SO YOU CAN MAKE OTHER PLANS.

REFUNDS DO NOT APPLY FOR INSTRUCTOR CHANGE ONLY TIME CHANGE.

8- IF IT'S IMPERATIVE FOR YOU TO RECEIVE A PRIVATE LESSON OR A PARTICULAR INSTRUCTOR, PLEASE ADD THIS TO THE NOTES SECTION WHEN MAKING RESERVATION, AND STATE WHY YOU THINK YOU NEED/ YOU WANT A PRIVATE LESSON/ PATIFCULAR INSTRUCTOR, WE WILL ALWAYS TRY TO ACCOMMODATE YOUR REQUEST. THERE IS A 50% WE WILL BE ABLE TO, HOWEVER IT IS NOT GUARANTEED. DUE TO OUR LIMITED HOURS AND STAFF WE COMBINE MOST SINGLE PERSON LESSONS UNLESS IT IS A VERY YOUNG CHILDREN OF SOMEONE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

9- IF YOU PAY FOR A PRIVATE LESSON, AND WE ADD YOU TO A GROUP, (NEVER LARGER THAN 5 PEOPLE) YOU WILL BE REFUNDED THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE AT THE END OF YOUR LESSON. WE TRY NOT TO DO THIS UNLESS IT'S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY DUE TO OUR BUSY SCHEDULE.

10- ALL RESERVATION ARE IN Pacific Standard Time. BE AWARE OF THIS WHEN BOOKING OUTSIDE OF PST. IF YOU HAVE A GOOGLE CALENDAR YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME WILL SYNC IN YOUR CALENDAR IN YOUR TIME ZONE AUTOMATICALLY.

11-ALL LESSON MEET AT OUR PRIMARY LOCATION 2701 BARNARD WAY SANTA MONICA CA 90405. PARKING LOT 5 SOUTH.

12- IF YOU ARE RESERVING A LESSON FOR CHILDREN, SOMEONE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, A MEDICAL CONDITION OR SOMEONE WHO CAN NOT SWIM, PLEASE SPECIFY THEIR AGE, SPECIAL NEED, OR CONDITION IN THE "MESSAGE" SECTION OF "RESERVATION REQUEST". WE FACTOR IN ALL VARIABLES WHEN PLANNING OUR LESSONS AND TIDE AND SWELL SIZE ARE MAJOR COMPONENTS WHEN WE ACCEPT OR SUGGEST ALTERNATE TIMES, ESPECIALLY FOR LESSONS NEEDING A HIGHER LEVEL OF CARE.

13-SURFING IS INHERENTLY DANGEROUS, IF YOU SHOW UP INTOXICATED (YES!, HIGH OR EXTREMELY HUNGOVER COUNTS) YOUR LESSON WILL BE CANCELED.

14- WHILE DOING A LESSON WITH KAPOWUI OR AT ANY TIME YOU ARE IN THE AREA OF OUR BUSINESS OPERATION, YOU GIVE UP YOUR RIGHTS TO ANY LEGAL RECOURSE OR MONETARY COMPENSATION AGAINST KAPOWUI, ANY OF IT'S INSTRUCTORS, OR THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES DUE TO INJURY OR DEATH SUFFERED WHILE IN OUR CARE OF OR BY ANY OF OUR EQUIPMENT, VANS, ACTS OF GOD, OR INSTRUCTORS. WE HAVE NO MONEY ANYWAY BUT LEGAL MUMBO JUMBO THAT MUST BE POSTED.
