Hi, my name is Clay. To me life is about finding what you enjoy and love, and spending your time doing those things. A big part of that for me is surfing. I grew up in Texas, playing music and various sports. I was into skating and wake boarding, and loved to keep up with surfing and snowboarding. I always wanted to live in a place where I could surf daily and be around people who enjoyed the same things I did. So as soon as I graduated high school I moved to Hawaii. It was awesome getting to surf everyday and to be able to see some of the pros I had grown up watching in person. A little over a year later I moved to Los Angeles to be in a culture that is all about surfing, skating, and music!

AKA "Ohhh Clayton" or youngan. Fun fact: Can fall asleep anywhere, lives in a van, is shy beyond belief unless he is teach or surfing, and loves pizza.

BEST WITH; YOUNG ADULTS.

My name is Ryan, I grew up surfing on the coast line of South Africa. I have been surfing for over 10 years and teaching around the world for the last 5 years. I come to teach lessons at kapowui every summer, from May to September. I recently started my own surf school in Wilderness, S.A., with Jonny. I have competed in several national contests but I find my deepest passion for surfing is most felt during free surf sessions with friends at some remote surf break in a secluded area off the beaten track. I love teaching people how to surf and sharing the stoke of surfing just as much as love surfing myself. So come hang out with me and enjoy one of the most unique sports in the world with all of your Kapowui friends and family.

AKA Rye Bread. Fun Fact: Ryan is ALWAYS up for a surf sesh and new adventure. Every time you talk to him about surfing his First question is "Did you get Barreled!" or "Let's go get Barreled!!".

BEST WITH; KIDS, FEMALES, SPECIAL NEEDS, NERVOUS STUDENTS, AND OLDER ADULTS.

Hi, I'm Todd but sometimes they call me Fraggle Rock. Probably because I can be a bit quirky and goofy, but I'm ok with that- life is all about having fun and catching waves.
As your instructor I will teach you the proper techniques you'll need to catch waves and assist you with catching the right waves. Surfing can definitely be challenging, but it's always worth it and the most rewarding thing a person can do. So let me show you what the surfers life is all about and how fun the ocean can be. Whether you're a beginner learning for the first time or a seasoned veteran looking to improve your game, the Kapowui method will get you up surfing with a smile  or help you improve your game.  So come join me and let's ride some waves together and share the greatest fun life has to offer.

AKA Shaolin / Fragle Rock- Fun fact:  Todd spins fire at music festivals and in his free time. He is always out and about in Venice living the bohemian artist surfer life.

BEST WITH; KIDS, SPECIAL NEEDS, YOUNG ADULTS.

Leon, is from South Africa and was first introduced to surfing at age 15 when he surfed in the shark filled waters of Jay Bay. He immediately fell in love with the sport! Since learning to surf, he has been surfing around the world looking for less sharky waves in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, and Indo! Now he wants to share his passion with you. It's not just about the surfing Leon loves but the spirituality he finds when he's riding a wave or just waiting for a wave. Before surfing Leon was an avid skateboarder. Board sports have always been a very important part in 'Leon's life and hopes to pass that love on to you! Now let's go surf!

AKA -GQ. Fun fact: Leon is an accomplished model and won Mr. South Africa. Comes during the summer from SA to do lessons and hang out with his surfer family. One of the nicest and most respectful person you will ever meet. He currently  helps his father build houses in the hot African sun and can't wait to get back to Venice where it's only 90 degrees.

BEST WITH; ALL

Hi, I’m Will, I’m a professional at having fun and passionate about new people and new experiences. I spend my summers teaching people to surf and my winters traveling the world on a quest for the best waves. So if you want an unforgettable California surfing experience, you are going to want to book me... like at this very moment. What are you waiting for?! JUST DO IT! See you at the beach!

AKA Maggie. Fun Fact: is not hindered by shyness

BEST WITH; Adults, beginner to advanced surfers.

Ryan, little bro

Aloha, my name is Martin, I am  the founder of Kapowui. I live, eat, sleep, and dream surfing. I live a block from the beach and surf every day. I've surfed all over the world and my favorite place is the North Shore of Hawaii. My lifes calling is bringing the stoke of surfing to everyone who is interested learning. The feeling of surfing is unlike any thing you have ever felt before, it is indescribable, I call it  "Kapowui", which means "pure joy". Hence the name of my company.

I started kapowui 10 years ago with 1 old beat up surf board an a couple or worn out wetsuits. I taught lessons for 10 years while building the company and after many years of fine tuning, I developed the lesson plan that all the instructors use today. I incorporated my ISA surf coaching and aquatic safety training, my 30 years of surfing experience, 20 years of personal training, 6 years as a rescue swimmer in the Navy,  my advance knowledge in bio-mechanics & kinesiology for a lesson that is comprehensive, technical, streamline, safe, successful and most importantly, fun. That's why I guarantee that you will be surfing your first lesson or your next lesson is free. I personally train all of my instructors and will not let them teach a lesson until they have meet my high standards.  The instructors will give feedback on every wave you catch and miss, break down everything you did right or could have done better, as well as cheer your successes and groan at your mishaps.

As the owner/manager, I rarely get to do lessons. So if you book me, I will assign you to the instructor who I think is best suited for your needs, aptitude, personality, age, and skill level. The more information you give about yourself when booking online, will help me assign the best instructor for you.  I look forward to meeting you and hearing about how much fun your surf lesson was with whomever you chose to be your instructor. Mahalo for choosing Kapowui!

AKA KAPOWUI. Fun fact:  All American mutt and athlete, raised on  a farm in Georgia, served 6 years in the Navy as a petty officer on a SARS team (Search and Rescue Swimmer), was a traveling professional dancer for 10 years, I collect old VW buses, I have more surf boards than cloths, and I lived in a van for 10 years while building Kapowui.  Morality, integrity, conscientiousness, are not mere words to me, they are a code I live my life by.

Youngest brother, Clay

Hi, I’m Corey, former semi professional / top amateur surfer. The son of legendary South Bay surfer / shaper Jeff Biggs. Surfing and music are my life's calling, and  I love grabbing my skate board to shred bowls at the skate park too. Being from the Sound Bay Area, I grew up going to school at Redondo Union High and surfing the big left handers down at the Breakwater. I then moved to San Diego to attend San Diego Sate University.  There is absolutely nothing I like more than teaching surfing.

Best with, people wanting a real surfing coach, with no BS, no warm fuzzy vibes, and very critical. Do not expect a fun time when booking Corey he is for people serious about wanting to learn how become a surfer, intermediate  surfers, or for advanced surfers.

If you are assigned Corey but know this is not what you are looking for in a surf lesson call us immediately to reassign your lesson to another instructor.

Aloha! My name is Michelle, and I’ve been surfing for the past 6 years. I surfed up and down the California coast, New Jersey, New York, Mexico, and Costa Rica. And, I aim to add to that list by traveling to other continents to surf the world!
Growing up in a small mountain town in Pennsylvania, I taught ski/snowboard lessons. I enjoyed teaching so much, and did it for four years.
Today, I combined my passion for teaching, and my love for surfing to give amazing surf lessons that’ll get you standing up on your first lesson!
Let’s share the good vibes and catch waves in beautiful Santa Monica!!

Todd

Michelle, little sister

having grown up in South America near the sea marked my life, I didn't have the opportunity to start surfing until I was 15 years old, but I learned how to swim with my mom in this small town with giant waves called Pichilemu. When I finally had my first surf lesson in the sea, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I bought everything I need to be in the water and learn to surf. From there it became my addiction and I could never leave it again, it is my search, my passion, my desire to be better to get up to go conquer those waves that, no matter how fearful I feel, they will always give me a satisfaction that is not I find nowhere else. There when I finally left school I decided to study oceanography to be able to surf and live the rest of my life near the sea, but life had another plan for me, and that was to come and live in the United States to continue traveling and surfing. waves that I had never imagined I would be surfing in my life. I have surfed for almost 15 years of my life, and if there is something that I am completely sure, it is that I want to do it until the day I die, in these moments I feel very happy and grateful to be able to take this new step of becoming a surf instructor where I can easily share my passion for the sea and everything I have learned in all these years of surfing.

Fun fact: lives in an RV with his family

Best with: kids and anyone who prefers a very calm,  patient instructor.

Fairfax

Fairfax, AKA Fearfax or Wonder Bread, was born and raised in Los Angeles, has been surfing since she was 11. She actually learned how to surf on the very same beach that Kapowui teaches at! She has always loved the ocean, is an avid scuba diver, and studied Wildlife Conservation. Having worked in the Tech industry for over 10 years she has decided to leave that stress behind and get back to her true loves,  teaching and surfing. Being a surf instructor dovetails perfectly into her current life's journey. She has been instructing surf lessons for the past 3 years and though she is one of the newest Kapowui family members she has proven herself to be capable to meet the standards that all of Kapowui's instructors must maintain. While doing a lesson with her you will be stoked you get to experience a moment in time on that path with her. She is the most positive uplifting person you have every met and will be your biggest cheerleader throughout your lesson.

Best with all, especially anyone who may be apprehensive and needs calm reassurance.

Haylee

Hey !I'm Hailee , born and raised in Sweden to Ethiopian/Swedish parents (so I clearly didn't learn how to surf there lol)I actually spent a huge part of my life as a pianist, dancer, painter and a thespian.. all of which are still actively a massive part of my life still. So art and creativity is pretty much what makes me tick.

I learned how to surf about 5 yrs ago at the very school you're looking at right now! And I cant explain what an incredible experience it was for me. Since then I've surfed in Portugal,  Hawaii, Ireland and France to name a few and always plotting my next surf trip. With that said,my hope is to have that very same impact for you, as an instructor and that you take what you learn with me and explore the world with your new found freedom ❤

Dylan

Hi I’m Dylan,

I’ve been surfing for 4 years now. I grew up in a Coastal town in the Garden Route,  and I spend most of my days in the ocean apart from hiking, exploring and skating. I also teach surfing in South Africa and now I’m teaching my passion in California for the summer. I’ve been doing lifesaving for the past 6 years and I am now the crew leader.  I feel more comfortable in the water than on land. I love teaching surfing and sharing the stoke I feel after every surf session. So come hang out with me and I’ll teach you the fundamentals of surfing and we’ll share the stoke together.

AKA Mowgli from the jungle book, they say I look like the character.

Alex,

Hey my name is Alex! I’m 24 and have been surfing for 8 years now! Before I was on a sponsored snowboarding team. I’ve surfed around the world but my favorite spot by far has been Mancora Peru. Surfing and being in the ocean has kept me grounded! The ocean is a great teacher if you are willing to be it’s student. I hope our surfing lesson can not only be a fun experience but also a spiritual experience. I’m stoked to see you!
