Kapowui is a family run business and and an icon of southern California.
We live, eat, and dream surfing and teach surfing because we want to share our love and stoke for the sport. This is a life choice for us and what gives our
lives meaning.
All of Kapowui's instructors are imbued with the Aloha spirit, live within blocks of the beach (4 of them live in surf vans), surf every day and have many years
teaching experience.
When we are doing a lesson with you, we are 100% focused and in the moment with you.
At Kapowui we truly care about your experience because we know the pure unfettered joy you are going to feel when you catch a wave and we get to vicariously experience that with you.
Whether surfing is a one time bucket list item or a new sport you want to pick up, we will have you up riding waves, 100% guaranteed! Additionally you will be immersed in the surf culture, giving you the opportunity to feel the true surfer vibe, while
learning a skill you can use forever.

Your lesson includes all the equipment - surfboard, wet suit, and instructor.
Your lesson will take place on the border of Venice and Santa Monica, where the sandy bottom is safe and perfect for beginner lessons.
We offer beginner, intermediate, group, and private group- 1 hour, 1.5 hour and 2 hour lessons. The first 30 minutes of your lesson is done on the beach, covering board design and dynamics, wave dynamics, ocean safety, surfing safety, surf etiquette, pop-up technique and form.
The remainder of your time is spent in the water, surfing with your instructor.
Just show up wearing your swim suit, sun screen, and a smile. We'll supply the equipment and good vibes.

KAPOWUI IS A CERTIFIED MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL SURFING ASSOCIATION AND ONE OF THE VERY FEW LA COUNTY PERMITTED, LICENSED, AND INSURED SCHOOLS TO LEGALLY OPERATE IN LOS ANGELES. ALL OF OUR EQUIPMENT IS NEW AND WELL KEPT AND WE ONLY HIRES PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTORS.
Due to city regulations, we are allowed to do a finite amount of lessons each summer and each day. The last 2 years we max'ed out on our quota, So make your reservation as soon as possible to guarantee a lesson with us, the Icon of Venice Beach, Kapowui.
Kapowui is a certified member of the The International Surfing Association (ISA). Founded in 1964, the ISA is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing and membership includes the Surfing National Federations of 103 countries.

Stay after your lesson, lay out, and get tan on the white sandy beaches, bike or walk on the boardwalk, experience the mayhem and chaos that is Venice. Check out muscle beach, the iconic Venice sign, Venice murals, skate park, street performers, discover all the local artists, bike to the Santa Monica and Venice piers, eat at the beach-side restaurants, bars, and shop at the beach side stores.

All lesson receive a free Kapowui souvenir and the kids receive free Kapowui sticker and gifts. Also if you need a place to store your valuables during your lesson, to charge your phone, wifi hotspot to make calls, check emails, or post your surf lesson on social media, store you luggage for a few hours before you check in to your hotel of a few hours after you check out before you your next flight. We can can use your phone to take a few pictures of you before or after your lesson. Free beach umbrellas and chairs for your use when available.
