Gone Surfing; signs  indicate that this instructor is unavailable till next spring or summer

Aloha, my name is Martin, I am  the founder of Kapowui. I live, eat, sleep, and dream surfing. I live a block from the beach and surf every day. I've surfed all over the world and my favorite place is the North Shore of Hawaii. My life's calling is bringing the stoke of surfing to everyone who is interested learning. The feeling of surfing is unlike any thing you have ever felt before, it is indescribable, I call it  "Kapowui", which means "pure joy". Hence the name of my company.

I started surf in 1987 when i was stationed in San Diego stationed in the Navy. 20 years later, I started teaching surfing in 2007 and realized soon after that the companies that hired me only cared about the money. So i started kapowui in 2010 with 1 old beat up surf board an a couple or worn out wetsuits so I could give the real surf experience and not grind out low quality lessons for employers who knew  and cared nothing about the surfing or the surf culture.

I personally taught all the lessons for 8 years while building the company and after many years of fine tuning, I developed the lesson plan that all kapowui instructors use today.  I incorporated my ISA surf coaching and aquatic safety training, my 30 years of surfing experience, 20 years of personal training, 6 years as a rescue swimmer in the Navy,  my advance knowledge in bio-mechanics & kinesiology for a lesson that is comprehensive, technical, streamline, safe, successful and most importantly, fun. My lesson plan is now used by many of the best surf schools around the world.

That's why I guarantee that you will be surfing your first lesson or your next lesson is free.
I personally train all of my instructors and will not let them teach a lesson until they have meet my high standards.  The instructors will give feedback on every wave you catch and miss, break down everything you did right or could have done better, as well as cheer your successes and groan at your mishaps.

As the owner/manager, I rarely get to do lessons. So if you book me, I will assign you to the instructor who I think is best suited for your needs, aptitude, personality, age, and skill level. The more information you give about yourself when booking online, will help me assign the best instructor for you.  I look forward to meeting you and hearing about how much fun your surf lesson was with whomever you chose to be your instructor. Mahalo for choosing Kapowui!

AKA KAPOWUI. Fun fact:  All American mutt and athlete, raised on  a farm in Georgia, served 6 years in the Navy as a petty officer on a SARS team (Search and Rescue Swimmer), was a traveling professional dancer for 10 years, I collect old VW buses, I have more surf boards than cloths, and I lived in a van for 10 years while building Kapowui.  Morality, integrity, conscientiousness, are not mere words to me, they are a code I live my life by.

Dad, Founder, Martin,

Aloha! My name is Michelle, and I’ve been surfing for the past 6 years. I surfed up and down the California coast, New Jersey, New York, Mexico, and Costa Rica. And, I aim to add to that list by traveling to other continents to surf the world!
Growing up in a small mountain town in Pennsylvania, I taught ski/snowboard lessons. I enjoyed teaching so much, and did it for four years.
Today, I combined my passion for teaching, and my love for surfing to give amazing surf lessons that’ll get you standing up on your first lesson!
Let’s share the good vibes and catch waves in beautiful Santa Monica!!

My name is Bryan, I grew up surfing on the coast line of Australia. I have been surfing for over 10 years and teaching around the world for the last 5 years. I come to teach lessons at kapowui every summer, from May to September. I have competed in several national contests but I find my deepest passion for surfing is most felt during free surf sessions with friends at some remote surf break in a secluded area off the beaten track. I love teaching people how to surf and sharing the stoke of surfing just as much as love surfing myself. So come hang out with me and enjoy one of the most unique sports in the world with all of your Kapowui friends and family.

AKA Rye Bread. Fun Fact: Bryan is ALWAYS up for a surf sesh and new adventure. Every time you talk to him about surfing his First question is "Did you get Barreled!" or "Let's go get Barreled!!".

Surfing can definitely be challenging, but it's always worth it and the most rewarding thing a person can do. So let me show you what the surfers life is all about and how fun the ocean can be. Whether you're a beginner learning for the first time or a seasoned veteran looking to improve your game, the Kapowui method will get you up surfing with a smile  or help you improve your game.  So come join me and let's ride some waves together and share the greatest fun life has to offer.

Leon, is from South Africa and was first introduced to surfing at age 15 when he surfed in the shark filled waters of Jay Bay. He immediately fell in love with the sport! Since learning to surf, he has been surfing around the world looking for less sharky waves in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Belize, Guatemala, and Indo! Now he wants to share his passion with you. It's not just about the surfing Leon loves but the spirituality he finds when he's riding a wave or just waiting for a wave. Before surfing Leon was an avid skateboarder. Fairfax, surf instructor / assistant manager / Photographer, Mother.

Cowabunga! My name is Fairfax and I’ve been surfing since the tender age of 11. I actually learned how to surf on the very same beach that Kapowui teaches at! After working in the tech industry for 10 years, I decided to leave that stress behind and follow my passion - teaching others to surf.

I enjoy making my students -- and kids in particular -- feel happy and at home in the water. I bring a light-hearted, patient approach to my lessons and almost always manage to get my students up and riding the very first time they go out. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader throughout your lesson and stoked to get you riding waves in no time!

BEST WITH: Kids, Females, Special Needs, Nervous Students

Clay

Hi, my name is Clay. To me life is about finding what you enjoy and love, and spending your time doing those things. A big part of that for me is surfing and skating. I grew up in Texas, playing music and various sports. I was into skating and wake surfing. I always wanted to live in a place where I could skate and surf daily and be around people who enjoyed the same things I did. As soon as I graduated high school I moved to Hawaii and surfed and skated everyday. Now i live in Santa Moncia, and skate the Venice skate park and surf up and down the coast, living my dream. I would love to pass along my  passions to anyone willing.

Nick

Though I grew up in the mountains of Colorado, I gave my heart to the sea at a young age. Spending my teenaged summers surfing and working construction on an island off the coast of North Carolina, I realized that the ocean was the core around which I wished to build my existence.
Now a Venice boy through and through, I live mere blocks from the sea & can be found roaming the neighborhood in search of good waves & good times.
I am proud to call this place, these people, and this ocean my home.

Haylee- Communications Manager, Kapowui Photographer, and Surf Instructor

Hey !I'm Hailee , born and raised in Sweden to Ethiopian/Swedish parents (so I clearly didn't learn how to surf there lol)I actually spent a huge part of my life as a pianist, dancer, painter and a thespian.. all of which are still actively a massive part of my life still. So art and creativity is pretty much what makes me tick.

I learned how to surf about 5 yrs ago at the very school you're looking at right now! And I cant explain what an incredible experience it was for me. Since then I've surfed in Portugal,  Hawaii, Ireland and France to name a few and always plotting my next surf trip. With that said,my hope is to have that very same impact for you, as an instructor and that you take what you learn with me and explore the world with your new found freedom ❤

Matthew Oh

I’m passionate about people and new experiences. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, I’ve always been active and grew up playing all types of sports. My journey as a former collegiate and professional football player has taken me around the world. It’s always been the people and places that has brought me the most joy.
